Mr. Tanner and his company constructed the Shoreside Park for the Town of Palm Shores. I have had an opportunity to observe both Mr. Tanner and his employees. We are thankful we found L. H. Tanner Construction to renovate our house. We plan to place a plaque on the house designating it as the Thompson Family Home. The extended Thompson Family includes four sisters and two brothers (a third brother died many years ago at the age of 23) as well as the next generation of extended Thompson families. My mother built the house in 1968 after my father, a career military officer, died of a heart attack at the age of 42. He fought in three wars – World War II, the Korean War, and Vietnam. This is the only family house ever owned (my mother eventually bought another house in Melbourne for her business). As a military family we moved frequently, sometimes every year. After my father died, my mother, an Illinois native but devotee of Florida, drove around the state until she found the place for her, built the house, and moved all seven kids in. We ranged in ages from 21 (I was the oldest) to 6. I attended college out of state at the time, but the rest of the clan attended the Brevard County schools either in Melbourne or Palm Bay. My mother is buried in Palm Bay. We want to keep the home. We are grateful to Holly and Lawrence Tanner for helping us through the renovation process – the house had changed little since 1968. When my nephew first saw the renovations in progress, he commented, “the house is the same but different.” That is my response as well. The house retains its original character and general structural outline, but the house footprint cast will indicate new energy, new and rearranged details, and beauty. Holly and Lawrence understood our mission and have worked with us to preserve the past but build an efficient, solid, contemporary, and handsome home. They are excellent at their jobs – working with construction and working with people.
